Stonecap Monson Family Estate - Washington
Stonecap Wines are handcrafted entirely from estate grown grapes from the renowned Goose Ridge Estate Vineyard in Washington
State's Columbia Valley. This expansive (1300 acres) and highly regarded vineyard allows the Monson Family to produce stunning
quality wines while remaining sensibly priced. Washington State's famed Columbia Valley produces extraordinary grapes in large
part due to the area's great soils-the result of massive flooding during the last Ice Age. Light and porous, these soils are
frequently wind-blown, and the windy tops of the many high hills and ridgelines of the region are typically devoid of soil
leaving a "stonecap" of rocks behind.
FEATURED WINE: 2005 Cabernet Sauvignon Columbia Valley
Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine is deep ruby red in color and has a noticeable extraction. At the nose the wine is
very charming. It shows plenty of ripe black fruit as well as cherry, sweet spice and oaky vanilla aromas. At the palate the wine
is dry, warm, very fresh, tannic and mineral. The flavors follow true to the nose which are plenty of red fruit, oak and spice.
Tannins are supple and the finish is very long and smooth. The wine has an overall excellent quality. Enjoy now or lay it down for
a few more years and enjoy it with beef tenderloin in red wine sauce, roasted lamb and savory cured meat (such as Bresaola).
Tierra Del Sol - Argentina
The name "Tierra Del Sol" translates to land of the sun in English. The name is taken from the phrase, "tierra del sol y buen
vino (land of sun and good wine)", which is what the province of Mendoza is known as. Tierra Del Sol wines come from Mendoza,
which is the most important wine producing region in Argentina. The province of Mendoza produces more that 75% of Argentina's
wine. Mendoza is situated at the foot of the Andes mountain range. The vineyards fan out over hills and valleys at southern
latitudes equivalent to the northern latitudes of the best vineyards of France, Italy, and the USA. Mendoza seems to have all
that is needed to produce world-class wines and Tierra Del Sol takes full advantage of that.
FEATURED WINE: 2009 Malbec
Made from 100% Malbec. Intensely violet in color, on the nose this wine exhibits classic Malbec notes of blueberry, black cherry
and violets. In the mouth lush flavors of freshly picked boysenberry, raspberry and blackberry give way to notes of chocolate and
mocha. Fresh acidity and soft tannins combine to give a long, elegant finish. This wine is perfect now or cellar for 2 years.
Enjoy on its own, with barbequed red meat, spicy chorizo sausages or a hearty stew.
Alianca - Portugal
Alianca is a family run company that is one of the most advanced and modern wine producers in Portugal. Alianca was recently
named one of the 20 best wineries in the world by Wine Spectator. This thoroughly modern estate has done a great deal to put
Alentejo wines on the map. Alianca is an excellent example of what Portugal can produce given capital, leadership and fine
winemaking expertise. The estate began once the land was reclaimed from the "workers" in 1979. The expansive, cavernous cellars
were built in 1987 and the facilities were greatly expanded in 1995 when a large dam was constructed to provide regular
irrigation.
FEATURED WINE: MV Vinho Verde
This multi-vintage blend is made up of a blend of Trajadura, Pederna, Loureiro and Alvarinho grapes. The current vintage produced
one of the best Vinho Verdes ever with luscious flavors of lemon meringue pie. The granitic soil, the climactic conditions and the
grape varieties of the Vinho Verde region of Portugal's Northwest give this famous wine its special characteristics of crisp
fruit and delicate aroma. Lightness and freshness make this low alcohol crisp white wine ideal by itself and as a perfect
complement to seafood, hors d'oeuvres, chicken and veal. Try it with stir fry, spicy dishes and oysters.
INTERNATIONAL - Wine of the Month Club
Bodegas Mano a Mano - Spain
Mano a Mano is a self-sufficient winery, supplied by its stunning vineyards that stretch from the winery towards the horizon.
This winery is located in the terroir of La Mancha found in the eastern region of the Denomination of Origin. The soil is the
reason that the winery committed themselves to purchasing 95 hectares (228 acres) of vineyards, located at an altitude of 660
meters (1980 ft) above sea level, with an average age of 40 year old vines. The sandy soils (up to 1 meter in depth) have an
underlayment of large river stones, with a lot of iron, clay, and chalk. The vines produce very low yields of 1-2 kgs of grapes
per vine. Winters are very cold; summers are hot with cool nights and it is a very arid climate. The Spanish enologist, Rafael
Canizares seeks to achieve the maximum expression of the Tempranillo grape grown in this environment. After very careful
vineyard selections, only the best vines of Tempranillo grapes are hand harvested.
FEATURED WINE: 2007 Manon Roble Crianza
Made Dark cherry-red, with an intense purplish color round the edges. Aromas of ripe forest fruit, cocoa, violets and a balsamic
flourish against a smoky background. Flavorsome, fresh, balanced and meaty, with good fruit on the palate. Forest fruits take the
lead for the overture. This wine is ready now and can be enjoyed over the next two years. Serve at room temperature accompanied by
Castilian lamb and suckling pig roasts, and stewed beef.
Vina San Pedro - Chile
Wine has been made in Chile ever since Missionaries introduced vines and wine making in the mid-sixteenth century. However,
the modern wine industry began in 1851, when grapes and method of viticulture and viniculture were imported from Bordeaux.
Through an accident of history, this took place the moment before phylloxera devastated the vineyards of France. Thus, the vines
of Chile have never been infected. Moreover, because of its fortunate geographical position, Chile has escaped the devastation of
mildew. To the east, the Andes have prevented the influx of the louse from Argentina. The Atacama Desert has been a protective
barrier from Peru to the north, and the winds of the Pacific have prevented entry from the air. Vina San Pedro's foundations were
forged in 1865 when brothers Bonifacio and Joes Gregorio Correa Albano acquired pieces of land formerly owned by their ancestors.
They began to produce their first wines with local grape varieties then later replaced these with noble vines from Southern
France.
FEATURED WINE: 2008 Batitu Cabernet Sauvignon Central Valley
Batitu wines come from vineyards located in Chile's Sunny Central Valley. Made from 100% Cabernet Sauvignon. The color is a lively
red. The nose has integrated notes of red fruit, chocolate, and black pepper. The palate presents a well structured body and
notes of vanilla and coffee that last throughout the pleasant finish. It is ready to be enjoyed now but will keep for another
five years. Serve at room temperature in large goblets with roast beef, lamb chops, empanadas, and well aged cheeses.
Zolo - Argentina
Zolo is produced at one of the most technologically advanced wineries in Argentina. Zolo selects grapes from estate vineyards
throughout the different key regions of Mendoza. Located at various altitudes, each of these terroirs provides a different
expression of fruit and varietal concentration. The winemaker is Fabian Valenzuela, the vineyard manager is Carlos Correas,
and the owners are the Ortiz family. The purpose of the winery's Zolo classic line is to create a family of fruit-forward, easy
drinking wines, which can be enjoyed with a wide range of food or by themselves.
FEATURED WINE: 2009 Sauvignon Blanc Mendoza
Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. The wine pours a pale yellow. Aromas of grapefruit, orange and spices carry to the nose. On the
palate it is a juicy wine, with a fairly intense midweight. The harmonious, ripe acidity frames and lifts the slightly exotic
orange and white peach flavors. Drink now through 2012, this wine is perfect with Asian cuisine or a crisp salad.
Marquis Philips - Australia
Marquis Philips is collaboration between Australian winemakers Sarah and Sparky Marquis and USA importer Dan Philips to produce
exceptional wines. Sparky and Sarah Marquis were the winemakers at Fox Creek when they met U.S. importer Dan Philips. The
Marquises left to become consulting winemakers as soon as Fox Creek expanded. Philips worked with them on a number of projects,
including Henry Drive, Parsons Flat, and most recently Shirvington, another standout new wine from McLaren Vale. The mythological
creature appearing on the front label is the Roogle (a kangaroo/eagle) representing the lasting friendship and the shared destiny
that link Australia and the US. The philosophy behind Marquis Phillips wines is to develop rich fruit depth, structure and
distinctive varietal characteristics.
FEATURED WINE: 2008 Riesling South Eastern Australia
Made from 100% Riesling. The 2008 vintage conditions were similar in both of the growing regions. A mild start to the summer, with
average to low temperatures perfect for Riesling. There was little rain resulting in dryer than normal conditions and the
vineyards had minimum water allocations. The heat wave in March came after the harvest of the Riesling, so there was sufficient
water for the grapes to be harvested and fermented with their natural acidity. Pale straw in color with green hues. Aromas of cut
grass, fresh lemons and grapefruit. The palate explodes with traditional Riesling flavors of lemon juice, pineapple and some
sweetness providing a long and lingering finish. Drink now through 2011.
WEST COAST - Wine of the Month Club
5 Mile Bridge - California
5 Mile Bridge is headed by renowned winemaker Vance Rose. Vance grew up thinking there were only four types of wine (red,
white, pink and bubbly) and that within these categories, there was no difference. Then came a chance encounter with a bottle of
1959 Domain Maume Chambertin Clos de Beze that changed everything. Vance became a wino (in the most innocent and responsible
sense) and has for the past 29+ years been drinking, reading, traveling, collecting and helping to make wonderful wines. His
relatively early interest in wine led Vance to the wine business in college and afterwards he made a plan to work in every aspect
of the business: retail, wholesale and production. For the past 17 years Vance has grown small wineries into large ones, started
new wineries and helped to produce wines that have been embraced by consumers and critics alike, including landing wines in the
Wine Spectator "Top 100" list.
FEATURED WINE: 2005 Syrah Margarita Vineyard Paso Robles
Syrah, a grape whose origin can be traced back to the ancient Persian town of Shiraz (hence the Australian spelling of the same
grape), has found many successful homes around the globe including the Rhone River valley in France, many coastal areas of
southeast Australia and the Paso Robles area of the Central Coast of California. The grape is wonderful to grow because it is
adaptable to many climates and makes wines with different characters from the varying climates. The wine is made from 100% Syrah.
The 2005 is extremely deep in color with aromas of white pepper and raw bacon and deeply rich flavors of black fruit, roasted
meat and leather. This is a wonderful wine with any - you guessed it - roasted red meat.
Moon Mountain - Sonoma, California
High in the Mayacamas Mountains on the western side of Mt. Veeder, more than 1,000 feet above the Sonoma Valley, Moon Mountain
Vineyard offers some of the most difficult winegrowing conditions in California. The steep south-facing slopes, punctuated by
volcanic rock outcroppings, consist of thin, well-drained soils derived from volcanic ash and lava. Situated well above the fog
line, the vineyard receives generous sunshine late into the afternoon. This combination of frugal soils and warm, sunny
microclimate stresses the vines to produce rich rewards: small crops of superbly concentrated Cabernet Sauvignon and Sauvignon
Blanc grapes. Organic farming keeps the vines in balance and healthy, while enhancing the grapes' flavors. Harvested at full
maturity, the grapes receive meticulous care in the winery, including slow aging in small oak barrels in mountainside caves and
careful blending to achieve mouth-filling flavors of black cherry and currant fruit, complemented by subtle spice and toast
complexity.
FEATURED WINE: 2008 Sauvignon Blanc Sonoma County
Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Bright and refreshing, the wine entices with aromas of citrus, tropical fruit and verbena. Lively
flavors of kiwi, guava, orange zest and minerals dance on the palate, and then culminate in a clean, lemony finish. This delicious
melange of aromas and flavors came from the unique soils and mesoclimates of two quite different vineyards in the Sonoma American
Viticultural Area (AVA). If there is a "perfect" aperitif wine, this is it. Pair it with spicy Asian or goat-cheese appetizers,
sushi, fresh salads, grilled seafood and chicken. Serve chilled. Drink now through 2012.
Kyra Wines - Washington
First and foremost, owners and operators Kyra and Bruce Baerlocher are wine grape growers. They started making small private
lots of wine to help them grow the highest quality grapes in their vineyards. Their winery is located in Moses Lake, Washington,
where they have been part of the community for 20 years. They love the mystery and suspense of creating a beautifully smooth wine
to enjoy with food and friends.
FEATURED WINE: 2006 PSV Wahluke Slope
PSV (Purple Sage Vineyard) is comprised of 80% Merlot and 14% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Purple Sage Vineyard is relatively new
(planted in 2006) but has already began to garner critical acclaim for the varietals grown there of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot,
Chardonnay, Petit Verdot, and Malbec. This special blend is one that arouses the senses with raspberry cobbler, warm caramel,
and toasty vanilla. This wine is perfect now and will age gracefully through 2011. This wine is well-matched for the flavors of
chicken, red meat, fish, lamb, pork, pastas, stews or well-aged cheeses. Only 330 cases produced
Four Vines - California
First there was One. Winemaker Christian Tietje is a hedonist. He is passionate about wine: making it, drinking it and bringing
people together to enjoy it. Chris learned to love balanced, food-driven wines as an aspiring young chef in Boston. In 1990 he
moved to San Francisco, determined to pursue his passion and become a winemaker. Then there were Two. In 1994, Christian partnered
with Susan Mahler, a brainy and beautiful scientist. Armed with a degree in Earth Science, Susan took an immediate interest in
vineyards. Together they created Four Vines Winery featuring eclectic, appellation-specific Zins, and one incredible no-oak
"Naked" Chardonnay. Now there are Three. Christian and Susan worked harder than ever to grow their winery to 14,000 cases, but
they needed someone to help share the load. They connected with an old friend from Christian's childhood, Bill Grant, a successful
entrepreneur and financier. Bill joined Four Vines as an advisor and financier in 2002 and joined the partnership in 2004.
FEATURED WINE: 2008 Naked Chardonnay Paso Robles
This Chardonnay was fermented in 100% stainless steel and has not seen any oak, nor does it want to. Fruit is harvested from three
south facing hilltop vineyards in the Cat Canyon in Northern Santa Barbara: Los Alamos, Loma Verde and El Camino. The wine was not
put through malolactic fermentation, in order to maintain the natural acid balance. As a result, the nose is bright with crisp
apple and pear laced with clove, mineral and a hint of anise. On the palate, the Chardonnay exhibits crisp apple, white peach and
pear, finishing long with hints of citrus and mineral. Pure, bright, beautiful, unclothed, unhindered. Naked is made to go with
food instead of competing with it, like those buttered lumberyards masquerading as Chardonnay. Eat oysters and share with a
friend.

PLATINUM - Wine of the Month Club
A to Z Wineworks - Oregon
Ksana Wines - Argentina
The winery was founded and is owned by Marcela Gonzalez Riesgo and Hector Durigutti. Marcela is a well-respected agronomical
engineer and Hector is one of the most famous winemakers in Argentina. Their families are best friends and they decided to work
together on a small, ultra-premium project --using an amazing 90 year-old vineyard as the base-- that became Ksana. The name Ksana
comes from Sanskrit and means instant. For the Buddhists it refers the moment in which infinity is experienced in an instant.
Likewise, we believe at the moment of tasting a wine, one experiences its vineyard's history and winemaking process. The correct
combination of these is what will make a wine last in your memory forever.
FEATURED WINE: 2006 Malbec Mendoza
Made from 100% Malbec. A classic and elegant Malbec. Fresh, fruit-intense, and easy to drink. Deep purple color, with aromas of
blueberries, blackberries, and plums combined with coffee and milk chocolate. Full and well-built, the wine has firm but
integrated tannins that express the oak and the varietal. This wine is an ideal complement to red roasted meat, "as ado", and
pasta dishes with tomato sauce. Drink now through 2013.
Dehesa la Granja - Spain
The Dehesa La Granja Winery ("where time takes on a flavor and memory becomes an aroma...") is located in the province of
Zamora in an area that was once known as "Tierra del Vino", the Land of Wine in Spanish. It is Alejandro Fernandez's third winery
and has almost 800 hectares of varied lands on the banks of the River Guarena. It was formerly dedicated to producing wine and
then to breeding fighting bulls, until Alejandro Fernandez refurbished it and dedicated it once again to its original purpose.
The buildings include a small trial bullring to test young bulls' fighting spirit. Dehesa la Granja is no longer a dream and has
become one of the most beautiful properties in the winemaking world. It is a winery that respects the environment and is
integrated into it.
FEATURED WINE: 2003 Dehesa La Granja
This is the first vintage made entirely from estate vines, 100% Tempranillo from the Pesquera clones. Purity of fruit accompanies
generous texture and weight, with excellent balance and expression enhanced by two years in bottle prior to release. The wine
offers an attractive bouquet of smoke, mocha, coffee, and blackberry. This is followed by a structured, ripe, and concentrated
wine with several years of aging potential. It reveals some of the compression of the hot vintage conditions but should provide
pleasure between 2010 and 2023. Pair with Castilian lamb and suckling pig roasts, stewed beef meat and certain small game
specialties such as pheasant with plums.
Long Shadows - Washington
Founded by Washington wine pioneer Allen Shoup, Long Shadows Vintners is a collection of ultra-premium wineries comprised of
internationally acclaimed winemakers from the major wine regions of the world. Each winemaker is a partner in a unique winery
dedicated to producing a single Columbia Valley wine representing a 'best of type' that reflects the winemaker's signature style.
Poet's Leap is inspired by the greatest wines of Germany and crafted by one of Germany's most highly acclaimed Riesling producers,
Armin Diel, proprietor of the renowned Schlossgut Diel. Schlossgut Diel is internationally renowned for its white wines,
predominately Rieslings, across a wide range of styles.
FEATURED WINE: 2008 Poets Leap Riesling Columbia Valley
Made from 100% Riesling from a mix of old vine and German clones. A tight style is displayed by this bottling whose Riesling
floweriness and Fuji apple prettiness are on display from the very first sniff. Acidity keeps the wine somewhat sleek, crisp and
lively on the palate, and while it will could work as a stand-alone aperitif drink for those who like the minerally side of the
grape, it has the depth and inner structure to be happy alongside dishes like sauteed sea scallops wrapped in a piece of smoky
bacon. A very good Riesling now, it will find a lot more roundness with a few years in bottle. 94 Points Wine Enthusiast.
90+ POINT - Wine of the Month Club
Descendientes de Jose Palacios - Spain
The press can't seem to get enough of Alvaro Palacios these days -- his legend built on the stunning wines he has crafted from
the farthest reaches of Spain, from Priorat to Bierzo. Palacios' latest project features another rising star -- the obscure Mencia
grape. In the Bierzo appellation, perched in the Northwest corner of Spain, ancient Mencia vineyards emerge from the steepest of
hillsides, their roots deeply set into unique, mineral-laden soils. Under the skilled hands of Palacios and his cousin, Ricardo
Perez Palacios, the forgotten black grape (believed by some to be a cousin of Cabernet Franc), has achieved new heights. The 60-
to 100 year-old vines yield less than one ton per acre, resulting in a most concentrated, unique expression of this variety and
of the Bierzo terroir.
FEATURED WINE: 2007 Petalos del Bierzo DO
100% Mencia from vineyards ranging in age from 40 to 90 years. It spends its first few weeks in new French barriques before
transfer to seasoned oak for 6 to 10 months. Saturated purple in color, it offers up a super-fragrant bouquet of smoke, violets,
mineral, wild blueberry, and black raspberry. Fruity yet complex on the palate, it has superb depth, grip, and balance. This sexy
effort can be enjoyed over the next six years but only hedonists need apply. 92 Points Robert Parker.
Cliff Lede Vineyards - Yountville, California
Owner Cliff Lede, viticulturalist David Abreu, Winemaker Michelle Edwards, and consultant Michel Rolland have come together to
form an unrivalled team, making the most of this remarkable property. Completed in time for crush 2005, the new state-of-the-art
gravity-flow winery boasts a berry-by-berry sorting system and conical tanks commissioned using a design inspired by the tanks of
Chateau Latour. One tank per vineyard block ensures each lot evolves at its own pace and acres of caves with single-layer barrel
storage ensure access to each barrel at all times. No corner has been cut. The winery produces Sauvignon Blanc, Claret and
Cabernet Sauvignon. The land, the talent, the tools and the passion: Cliff Lede Vineyards, a notable addition to the Stags Leap
District.
FEATURED WINE: 2006 Cabernet Sauvignon Napa Valley Stags Leap District
Made from 93% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Merlot, and 2% Malbec. The 2006 Cabernet lights up out of the bottle with a precocious
bouquet of exotic spices and old leather. Given a moment to rest, aromas of sweet marjoram, rose oil, cardamom and blackcurrant
jam evolve into exceptionally sweet floral notes of star jasmine and a touch of trumpet vine. Initial flavors of cherry deepen as
fine tannins expand and unfold. Dark stone fruits mix and integrate with sweet tannins and fleshy acidity, giving way to a
persimmon inspired finish that coats the mouth. This wine should evolve well for the next 12 years with proper care. 92 Points
Wine Spectator.
Serge Dagueneau et Filles – France
Serge Dagueneau and his daughters are the uncle, and cousins, respectively, of Didier Dagueneau (Didier was widely known as
the best producer in Pouilly-Fume. Tragically, Didier passed away in a small plane crash on September 17, 2008). Serge's two
daughters, Florence and Valerie, are two hard-working, serious young vigneronnes, and most think, are the prime reasons that this
domaine is now starting to appear on many of the top wine lists in France. The vines for the cuvee Les Pentes are situated on the
marno-calcaire soil nearest Pouilly (compared to the flint-Silex-soil of St Andelain). The yields here, they limit to between 48
and 55 hl/ha. Serge, Florence and Valerie are also proponents of harvesting late, and their Les Pentes is marked by a distinctly
ripe-tasting, rich, melon quality which comes from Sauvignon on calcaire soil, when harvested at its peak of maturity.
FEATURED WINE: 2008 Les Pentes Pouilly-Fume AOC
Made from 100% Sauvignon Blanc. Smelling of peppermint, sage, lime, and honeydew melon, this coats the palate with chalky, nutty,
pungently herbal, and citrus zest residues. Impressively bright and focused, it finishes with a combination of lemon and
peppermint guaranteed to leave your eyes wide open. There's freshness, but also power. Still young, just bottled, this wine will
develop over 4-5 years. 90 Points Wine Enthusiast.
THE ULTIMATE - Wine of the Month Club
Sequana Vineyards - California
Sequana Vineyards was founded in 2007 with a focus on producing small quantities of single vineyard Pinot Noir from grapes
grown in the premium coastal appellations of Green Valley of Russian River Valley and Santa Lucia Highlands. Pinot Noir specialist
James MacPhail has complete control over the creation of Sequana's limited production wines - from farming to winemaking. He
understands Pinot Noir's temperament: its ability to convey the signature of each single vineyard and its preference for
restrained, gentle winemaking.
FEATURED WINE: 2007 Pinot Noir Sundawg Ridge Vineyard Green Valley
At 280 feet elevation, among rolling hills, old apple orchards and chestnut groves, Sundawg Ridge sits above the fog many
mornings. This 6.9 acre, sustainably-farmed vineyard was planted by the Kensler Family in 1999, and benefits from exceptional
exposure, temperate microclimate and mineral-rich Goldridge soils. Sequana is the sole producer of wine from this vineyard.
The 2007 vintage produced a stellar Pinot Noir. The wine itself is totally dry and silky and firm in acidity, yet soft in fine
tannins. You might call it noble. It's eruptive in cherries, sweet smoky bacon, raspberry granola and oaky sandalwood. Gorgeous,
seductive and brilliant, a truly great Pinot Noir that's impeccable now and will drink well through 2014. 97 Points Wine
Enthusiast.
Long Shadows - Washington
Founded by Washington wine pioneer Allen Shoup, Long Shadows Vintners is a collection of ultra-premium wineries comprised of
internationally acclaimed winemakers from the major wine regions of the world. Each winemaker is a partner in a unique winery
dedicated to producing a single Columbia Valley wine representing a 'best of type' that reflects the winemaker's signature
style. Allen Shoup named this wine in honor of his grandfather, Charles Chester, and his grandmother, Maggie Kidder. He has a
purpose in mind; a vision really, and that is to make a wine that says, "this is how good Washington wine can be." Allen selected
Gilles Nicault, former winemaker for Woodward Canyon, to bring the vision to fruition.
FEATURED WINE: 2004 Chester Kidder Blend Columbia Valley
Chester-Kidder is a blended red wine styled to showcase Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah, two outstanding blending partners that
represent the best of the Columbia Valley. Aged for 28 months in ninety-percent tight-grain French oak allows the fruit and oak to
integrate completely and gives the wine time to develop round tannins and richness; ten percent Eastern European oak adds
complexity and spice. The final blend came out to be 58% Cabernet Sauvignon, 29% Syrah, 10% Cabernet Franc, and 3% Petite Verdot.
Horse Heaven Vineyard and Red Mountain Vineyard Cabernet give the wine texture and concentration; Horse Heaven Vineyard Syrah adds
dark flavors and color; Cabernet Franc from Weinbau Vineyard (Wahluke Slope), one of the Columbia Valley's best Cabernet Franc
vineyards, adds aromatic intensity; and a small amount of Petit Verdot from Stone Tree Vineyard on the Wahluke Slope adds
intensity and tannins to enhance the mouth feel. Opaque purple-colored, it reveals an alluring nose of cedar, leather,
pencil lead, espresso, blueberry, and blackberry. Round and ripe on the palate, it borders on opulence while concealing enough
tannin to support another 5-7 years of cellaring. The sweet, savory fruit carries through into the lengthy finish. Drink this
superb effort from 2013 to 2030. 93 Points Robert Parker.
Cote Bonneville - Sunnyside, Washington
Hugh and Kathy Shiels planted the steep rocky south-facing slopes of the DuBrul Vineyard in 1992. They grow six varietals:
Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Syrah, Chardonnay, and Riesling. They continue to sell grapes to other wineries while
reserving portions of different blocks for their own wines. The ladies of their vineyard crew shape each vine to provide optimal
exposure to sunlight. Low vigor soils combined with their deficit irrigation regimen produce small berries, small clusters, and
low yields from their vines. Their winemaking team transforms the intensely flavored, bright vibrant fruit into wines that are
distinctive and powerful, yet soft and approachable. Their wines express the site, its soils, and their efforts to concentrate
the essence of their terroir.
FEATURED WINE: 2007 Chardonnay Yakima Valley DuBrul Vineyard
Made from 100% Chardonnay. The wine was vinified using traditional Burgundian techniques, aged on the lees for 17 months in French
oak, then bottled, unfined and unfiltered, on February 18, 2009. displays beautiful aromatics. The tropical fruit, Meyer lemon,
minerality and a taste of honey are highlighted by the bright acidity. Subtle oak and lovely integration linger on the extended
finish. This powerful white pairs well with Maine lobster and butter, grilled pork loin, or roast herb chicken. Only 200 cases
were produced. 93 Points Wine Spectator.
SPARKLING WINE & CHAMPAGNE of the Month Club
Bisol - Italy
One of the biggest names in Prosecco, Bisol Desiderio & Figli has been making high quality sparkling wines in this corner
of the Veneto since 1875, although centuries earlier the family was already growing grapes in the region. One of the few wineries
in the area to produce sparkling wines utilizing both the Charmat Method (the method used to produce Prosecco) and Classic Method
(with 2nd fermentation in bottle), Bisol has long been recognized as an innovative presence in the Prosecco DOC. Although
production was interrupted during World War I, when fighting destroyed much of the area, the company re-organized in the 1930s.
These days, the family-run winery is managed by Antonio and Eliseo Bisol together with their sons: Gianluca and Desiderio,
Claudio and Alberto. Together, the family supervises every step of the winemaking process, from taking care of the 65 hectares
of vineyards (50 of them DOC vineyards, and 3 in the highly valued Cartizze zone), to supervising the low-yield harvest, to
bottling and aging the dozen-plus wines made by the company.
FEATURED WINE: NV Prosecco Brut Jeio
Made from 100% Prosecco 100% Prosecco produced from selected grapes from vineyards on the upper hills where, thanks to soil and
microclimate, it developed incomparable finesse. Straw yellow with a minute and persistent perlage, the wines aromas are fruity
with rich scents of wildflowers. The flavor is also fruity with pronounced hints of apples and pears; a harmony that is rounded
out by appropriate sapidity. At 11.5% ABV this Prosecco wine is extremely drinkable. Serve it at 9° C. (48° F.)
outside meals as an aperitif or as an accompaniment for light foods. Recommended goblet: Chalice.
Rimarts - Spain
Rimarts is a small family winery run by two brothers, Ernest and Ricard; rather than one of the large cava factories which
dominate the market with volume and advertising. As an artisanal product, all Rimarts cava is made by traditional methods and by
hand. Either Ernest or Ricard is intimately involved with each step of the process. The expert elaboration commences by selecting
only the best free run juice from the different grape varietals that go into each blend. Extended aging on the lees for much
longer than the legal minimum ensures exceptional smoothness and complexity. Riddling and disgorgement are done entirely by hand
without the aid of ice. The hand disgorgement is really something to observe and seldom done anywhere else; Ernest and Ricard
have the scars on their hands to prove it. Rimarts is the driest and full-bodied of cavas; genuinely it is own unique category of
sparkling wine. They consistently rank among the top in the most important yearly book on Spanish wines, Guia Penin.
FEATURED WINE: NV Cava Brut Reserva
Equal parts Xarel-lo, Parellada, Macabeu. Fresh, nutty aromas with hints of citrus and apples lead into a wine with a clear,
mineral backbone and refreshing chalky texture. Full bodied, but good tension renders a mousse that is both fine and persistent.
Very refreshing, but rich and mouth-filling. The result is a clean, elegant and complex style of Cava well suited to food pairings
of hors d'oeuvres, seafood and other fish dishes. A perfect aperitif. Classy stuff.
